He is one of the most well known characters of Mortal Kombat, he's the hero, he is the Champion. He's Liu Kang. Though not nearly as popular as Scorpion or Sub-Zero, still he is a huge name in the game franchise.
This is the final part of this 5-part story of Mortal Kombat's champion; Liu Kang.
As we left off from our last part (click here) Liu Kang had successfully defended Earthrealm, and though he initially failed Edenia, but saved it by helping Raiden defeat Shinnok.
Prologue (Deadly Alliance)[]
Several years have passed since Liu Kang aided Raiden in defeating Shinnok. He also saved Edenia that he previously failed during a battle where he helped Kitana and her own forces.
As Liu Kang was enjoying peace, behind the scenes the demon sorcerer Quan Chi who helped Shinnok escape from the Netherrealm had discovered the long forgotten (and undefeatble) army of Outworld's once mighty Dragon King; Onaga. In order to revive Onaga and his army, he must take the very souls of beings throughout the realms, this is when he enlisted the help of Liu Kang's eternal enemy; Shang Tsung, thus creating the "Deadly Alliance". They first venture to Outworld and formed a "false alliance" with Shao Kahn, but as Shao Kahn led an army to conquer a part of Outworld, the Deadly Alliance showed their true colors and killed Shao Kahn at the right time. Then they used a mysterious portal to venture into Earthrealm and to the Wu-Shi Academy inside the Kang Shaolin Temple where Liu Kang was performing his daily training.
Shang Tsung tried to surprise Liu Kang from behind by posing as Kung Lao, but Liu Kang knew this attack and counter attacked. During the fight where Liu Kang had Shang Tsung pinned down, Quan Chi then surprised Liu Kang by throwing his Green Energy Skull that stuns Liu Kang, giving Shang Tsung the perfect opportunity to finish Liu Kang, and succeeds by snapping his neck and then consuming his soul, thus Shang Tsung finally gets his revenge on the Earthrealm Warrior who has foiled his plans in the past. The Deadly Alliance has killed Earthrealm's mightiest warrior.
Minutes after Liu Kang's death at the hands of the Deadly Alliance, the real Kung Lao discovers Liu Kang's lifeless (and soulless) body and laid it to rest at the courtyard of the Kang Shaolin Temple. Liu Kang's allies; Kung Lao, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Jax, and Raiden attended his funeral. Soon after, Raiden gathers the rest of Earthrealm's warriors for a meeting, Raiden has renounced his title as Elder God to wage war against the Deadly Alliance before they can revive Onaga and conquer the realms, even Raiden knew that with Liu Kang dead, Earthrealm's strength has severely diminished, and the odds will be against them.
Having no choice[]
Unfortunately, like Liu Kang, even his allies (including Kitana) also fell victim of the Deadly Alliance, until Raiden was left to face the Alliance alone. Liu Kang's soul (still within Shang Tsung) can see the fight between his mentor and the Deadly Alliance. Liu Kang could do nothing but watch as Raiden would fall before the Deadly Alliance. What Liu Kang would also witness the trust between Shang Tsung and Quan Chi evaporate and eventually would fight against one another. But as Onaga was revived both would try to use their power (Raiden would aid them as he regained consciousness), eventually Raiden would use all of his power to stop the revived Dragon King, but to no avail. With Shang Tsung's death, Liu Kang's soul was released, but ascends into Outworld.
Deception[]
With Onaga revived, he uses Quan Chi's amulet to resurrect the souls of Earthrealm's warriors, and have control of them to do his bidding as Onaga know begins his own conquest for the realms, and sends a wandering man named Shujinko to find all of the pieces of a mystical weapon known as the "Kamidogu". While Shujinko was in Outworld, Liu Kang's soul teaches him in some ways of the great Kung Lao and help him defeat Onaga one day. When Liu Kang's soul realizes what is going on, he sets out on a journey to help his friends that were recently revived by Onaga. He enlists the help of Ermac and they try to find his friends. Meanwhile back in Earthrealm, a revived Raiden (who's now corrupt) uses his powers to try to revive Liu Kang. But because Liu Kang's soul was stuck in Outworld at the time, Raiden could only revive his body that went on a mindless rampage, killing many innocent Shaolin Monks, this is when Raiden uses his powers to place enchanted meathook chains on Liu Kang's body's armbands.
As Liu Kang and Ermac return to Earthrealm, Liu Kang's soul sees the murdered Shaolin Monks at his Temple and the Wu-Shi Academy. He couldn't help but feel responsible for what his body has done. Along with freeing his friends, Liu Kang knows that he must stop his zombie body from doing any more damage.
His first priority is to free his friends from Onaga.
Liu Kang's soul along with Ermac fought against Liu Kang's allies who have been revived by Onaga and are now under the influence of Shinnok's amulet (and thus under Onaga's control). Ermac held off Liu Kang's allies while Liu Kang's soul used his powers to free them from Onaga's control. Once Liu Kang's allies were freed. Liu Kang's soul rejoins with Kitana, and both are now trying to find a way to stop Liu Kang's body from doing any more harm. Kitana decrees that both Liu Kang's body and soul must be rejoined, so they seek out Nightwolf to try to reunite Liu Kang's soul with his body. Unfortunately for them, fate would intervene.
Armageddon[]
As the volume of warriors from all of the realms reached its apex, the Elder Gods have chosen Blaze to the final arbiter to save the realms from what Edenian sorceress predicted to be "Armageddon". The Elder God Argus has constructed a pyramid in his native Edenia where he wants the final battle to take place and that final battle would decide the fate of the realms. During this time, all of the kombatants would be locked in a heated conflict. Unfortunately for Liu Kang's soul, Kitana and Nightwolf (who became Liu Kang's soul's holding place) would be the victims of this war, so Liu Kang's soul would have no choice but to ascend into the heavens.
Meanwhile, Liu Kang's body found a recently revived Shang Tsung and fought him, though Shang Tsung would knock down Liu Kang's temporarily, Liu Kang's body would use the meathook chains to stop Shang Tsung, and sap him of his youth and power. In the end, Argus' son Taven would fight and defeat Blaze who would use Blaze's power to decide the fate of the realms which remained in awkward limbo until Taven found a solution to Armageddon. Thus putting Liu Kang's fate in limbo as well.
